St. Louis, MO (April 2014) – The 2014 International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma kicked off Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center in Alexandria, Virginia. The Symposium, now in its 11th year, welcomes all attendees from patients and their families to advocates, members of the medical community, and more. The Symposium, which begins on Advocacy Day, will feature a series of advocacy presentations, followed by a trip to Capitol Hill to meet with elected officials in an effort to help increase federal funding for mesothelioma research.
“This is a great and necessary event that brings together all the great minds of the medical research community in one room to discuss and advocate for advanced treatment, earlier diagnostic options and in ultimately a cure to mesothelioma cancer,” said Neil Maune, partner at MRHFM.
On Thursday, March 6 and Friday March 7, the Symposium presented Science and Community Sessions, which covered a variety of topics on mesothelioma as well as discussions with scientists and the community. Keynote speakers included Dr. Ira Pastan, Molecular Biology Section Head at the National Cancer Institute; Dr. Dean Fennell, Chair of Thoracic Medical Oncology at the University of Leicester, and Dr. Michele Carbone, Director of the University of Hawaii Cancer Center.
In addition to 20 other renowned speakers such as Dr. Hedy Lee Kinder, Director of the Mesothelioma Program at The University of Chicago Medicine; Dr. Anne S. Tsao, Director of the Mesothelioma Program at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Dr. Lee M. Krug, Thoracic Oncologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the Symposium featured special community dinners each night in honor of award recipients and the community. The Symposium closed with a live performance by the Meso Fighters Band.
