World No Tobacco Day

It is no secret that tobacco has very negative effects on one’s overall health. According to the World Health Organization, nearly 6 million people are killed by tobacco each year and 600,000 die each year from exposure to second hand smoke. Tobacco upsets and hinders most other health ailments like in the case with those exposed to asbestos and /or living with mesothelioma.

In most cases, mesothelioma originates in many of the protective linings that cover major organs in the abdomen and chest. And asbestos is also a causative agent in many cases of lung cancer. Many studies have reported that people who smoke and have asbestos exposure have a sevenfold increase over smokers with no asbestos exposure in the development of lung cancer. Unlike lung cancer, mesothelioma is not caused by cigarettes unless the smoker was also exposed to asbestos.

World No Tobacco Day highlights the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocates policies to reduce Tobacco consumption. This year’s theme is “Ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship.”
