Jackson, Mississippi is located on the west bank of the Pearl River about 45 miles east of the Mississippi River. Jackson is both the state capital of Mississippi and the state’s largest city. Jackson was originally part of the Choctaw Nation’s territory before the area was ceded to the United States through various treaties. In 1822 Jackson was incorporated and made the state capital, named for General Andrew Jackson.
The railroad, first arriving in Jackson in 1840, was crucial to Jackson’s development as the city is not located along the Mississippi River like many growing cities at the time. Jackson became a manufacturing and railroad hub for the Confederacy during the Civil War, housing manufacturing facilities producing weapons, ammunition and textiles. These facilities made Jackson a target during the war and they city was burned and looted on several occasions throughout the war. Recovery was slow for Jackson at the start of the twentieth century, but the city’s population grew rapidly, bringing a boom of construction in the 1920s. The 1930s brought the discovery of natural gas fields nearby. These wells brought industrial growth and wealth and cheaper fuel drew oil refineries, power plants and railroading to the city. Jackson’s Hawkins Field also became a major airbase during World War II.
Jackson’s history of manufacturing and construction unfortunately includes many occupations and job sites where asbestos was widely used during the 20th century. This puts many Jackson residents at an increased risk of developing mesothelioma cancer from asbestos exposure.
