  • Step 1 of 2: What is the diagnosis?

Manchester is the largest cities in the state of New Hampshire, located in the Northeastern part of the state along the banks of the Merrimack River which divides the city. Originally a part of Massachusetts, the settlement was incorporated as Derryfield in 1751 after New Hampshire broke away from Massachusetts. In the early 1800s, a lock system was built on the Amoskeag Falls and a cotton mill began operating on the water power  from the falls, making way for industrialization on the falls. In 1810, Derryfield was renamed Manchester after England’s industrial city and the mill was incorporated as Amoskeag Cotton & Woolen Manufacturing Co. It was later bought out and expanded to 3 mills reincorporated again as Amoskeag Manufacturing Co. Engineers planned a company town around the mill, and Manchester was incorporated as a city in 1846.

By the start of the twentieth century, Manchester was home to the largest cotton mill in the world and the Amoskeag foundry was producing rifles, locomotive and sewing machines among other good. The W.H. McElwain Company began operating the largest shoe factory under a single roof. World War I brought wartime industries to Manchester as the city supplied materials to the government. Industry in Manchester declined with the Great Depression and many of the mills were torn down in following decades. Today, the once textile centered town is home to manufacturing firms, retail, and service industries.

The history of textile milling and industry in Manchester unfortunately includes many occupations and job sites where asbestos products were popularly used throughout the 20th century. This puts Manchester residents at an increased risk of developing mesothelioma cancer from asbestos exposure on the job.
